MY PRECIOUS PEARL Pt 1

In 1990, I and my Precious pearl headed from the Pacific ocean to Africa, the storm raged and was boisterous; nature's pangs stretched forth.we imagined a world of opportunities sailing around like Hemingway's Man and the Sea.

Even in the midst of the storm our ship cap-sided. Right in the midst of the sea i could not swim neither could i dive. I met a shark while on top of the remains of the ship and i ask him "can you help me swim?" he said "no" even with its teeth pierced out for slaughter,i dodged as it moved close to me,i met the whale and it told me"I cap-sided your ship" i went on to ask mackerel "can you help me swim?" it said "I am too little" while in the midst of the Atlantic ocean.i imagined our distance to land and there was no hope,i asked all fishes and none responded.

The wind subsided and there was still hope.we were getting closer to land;she said "won't you ask other fishes?" and i responded "but they all kept calm" i shouted "what the hell are you fishes, can't you help us?" a dolphin told me "ease up and you'll be outa here" i wondered what it meant.Thereafter we kept quit both of us and we looked at each other saying "there something precious about this silence!" i learnth a great lesson, when a larger dolphin told "persist even when your boat sinks "i wondered, how about our life?" it told me "its safe".

At this time the ship had almost sunk,it was no longer fun for me and her. A whale came to our rescue and she pushed me to the whale leaving herself on top of the remains of our ships,i struggled with the whale in the midst of the water and it cornered me like a merry-go-round,i asked the whale "but how about her?" it told she'll be fine i asked again but how? "he responded cos shes' sacrificial" i came to dilemma as i wondered the lesson nature taught. The whale dropped me and i cried thinking i had lost her and it swim ed back, another whale brought her and i was happy.

We got to the shore and imagined our escape from the turbulent sea. We lied helplessly by the sea shore;meanwhile the people of Udonga have been praying to their gods for the visit of a foreigner,we were welcomed, the whole community welcomed us. We went to the Oba's palace and introduced ourselves as foreigners from Mississippi,we told them our mission was to bring quality education to Africa, they were happy as illiteracy was to be wiped out among their children. They provided a lodge for us and we were happy.

Soonest we made new friends like Uyi, Chuckwudi and Oyemerife who were students in a dilapidated primary school, which we saw on our tour of the land. We received gifts ranging from yam tubers, roasted bush animals like Antelope "which we ate for the first time",we started our implementation of plans and gathered the villagers. We taught them English Language. I taught the topic "sentences" of which i gave concrete examples like " I am a boy" "This is a bag".

I told each of them to have a writing material, initially i found it difficult to teach them because, they have long forgotten what they were taught since the last missionaries came. I asked some of them to give me some other examples which they felt connoted sentences. Segun got up and said "He can goes" i told him try more, try more and he said "he can wented" the class burst into laughter as they felt the sentences were not correct. I then asked them to correct him but none stood up to do so. I gave the correct forms of those sentences as "He is going" and " Rafiu went out today".

Important notes were taken and the class ended that day, meanwhile i was missing my wife who was at home. They dispatched and went to their various houses. On getting home,my wife was happy to see me,meanwhile she already cooked beef stew and rice, oh my Gosh! this was a sumptuous meal. That was a cool evening after the great heat encountered during the day.

While we slept we heard a sound as of the cycling of palm fronds,we were afraid and our minds wondered back to what we read about Africa's primitive custom beliefs. The next morning our neighbors warned us not to come out whenever we hear such noise, that their gods were patrolling the land and that the god's would flog any one it sees, the victim would be swollen after three days and die. We learnth that the night hours were delicate in Africa, this was noted.
